AnyDAC becomes FireDAC 2013/02/28 07:12 (3 Years, 10 Months ago)
I'm getting more and mor confused of what's going on with AnyDAC.

Today I've found in my EMBT download area

FireDAC for Delphi, C++Builder and RAD Studio XE3 Ent/Ult/Arch

which will be available only to registered users of Enterprise, Ultimate or Architect editions of Delphi XE3, C++Builder XE3 or RAD Studio XE3; or Embarcadero All-Access XE Silver level or higher

Well, I'm an "Ultimate user" so I can download it but what's about a Professional user with a valid AnyDAC subscription?
No further information at all, no e-mail from EMBT although I had subscribed at

forms.embarcadero.com/forms/AnyDAC

So I tried to find something more and at least I found this

www.embarcadero.com/products/rad-studio/firedac

Wow, we can read there
Get FireDAC Free!

Unfortunately not high colored:

With purchase of XE3 Enterprise, Ultimate or Architect editions of RAD Studio, Delphi or C++Builder

Hmm, what happens to someone who still has a valid subscription?
Scroll down you will find the FAQs at

www.embarcadero.com/products/rad-studio/firedac-faq

What do I do if I own AnyDAC with a current subscription?

Watch for an email from Embarcadero with instructions and a special offer to move to FireDAC. If you don't receive an email by March 15, 2013, please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for assistance.

Great, put FireDAC into Archive and wait...

Ok, now let us look at FireDAC:

FireDAC's setup proposes to be installed into the current AnyDAC directory that's why I assume it would be an update (FireDAC ver. no. is 7.0.1.3119). No readme, no addtional hints, breaking changes or anything else. Just like a black box. That's exactly what I suspected.

And now? Requesting suppot? Simply look at the FAQs:

Does the purchase price include updates and support?

Support and ugrades are not included in the purchase price. We strongly recommend purchasing the optional support and maintenance offering to get one year of updates, upgrades and three support incidents for FireDAC. Support is renewable on a yearly basis.

For Enterprise, Ultimate and Architect edition users, if you have support and maintenance on Delphi/C++Builder/RAD Studio then it will also cover FireDAC. If you donТt have support and maintenance on your IDE, we recommend purchasing it with your next upgrade to keep up to date with new releases and to have access to support when you need it.

Great thank you very much! As mentioned above we should wait for an email from EMBT until March 15, 2013.
Greater! AnyDAC Supscription ends at March 11? Sorry for being late...
Ah, my subscription is valid until March 11, 2014. Let's see how they will deal with this...

Conclusion: I am a real frustrated AnyDAC user.

Edit:
The Supplemental Terms says that it also can be used by Professional users (attached screenshot).

Edit 2:
Now I saw that XE3 Pro user can purchase the FireDAC Client/Server Pack.

The support you have anyway with an Enterprise version and above assuming you have SA:). Maybe EMB could consider an SA offering... simply back dated or something similar. We will see what email will tell us. In worst case you can downgrade to simple C++ Builder/Delphi Enterprise SA. I have tested this live. For me Prof + FireDAC does it's job ... many more people get it.

I have investigated FireDAC.

Professional users can buy the Client/Server Add-On Pack and Enterprise users get it anyway. You can install FireDAC into the professional version. Since SA is 150 EUR (in my case in EUR) I don't think the deal is this bad. So EMB as well as da-soft considered existing users. If datasnap is included too the better. Various alternatives exist to address services, web services as well as JSON support...

Question that will come. FastReport support works simply by putting one or more frxDataSet son the 'form' and activate those in the FastReport designer under Report->Data ... - The add-ons as described in the manual are not provided, but this has been announced.

My AnyDAC subscription ist valid until March 2014. From my point of view I do not need to engage SA (back dated or not) regardless which RAD Edition I'm using.

Customers who still have a valid subscription should be informed before delivering a "new" product just for avoiding confusion.

Ok. This is something that has to be considered, imo. My contract ends somewhere in the middle. We will see. If EMB is wise they simply don't change anything for one year, especially concerning support and bug fixes. A transition period of one year ... why not.

The moment you inform the existing customers you can make it public:). You know, news spread pretty fast. The Delphi community is perfectly organized form this perspective. We learned to fight like the American natives at Little Big Horn - peer approach.

Honestly, personally I am not unhappy at the moment from a long term perspective but it's just mine. The reason why I am somehow happy is that Dmitry takes care about the DB stuff.

The decision that has to be done is a simpler one. EMB will very likely support the current version, Marco has written something similar on his blog. In best case he referred to not supporting former Borland Delphi versions especially aiming at D7.

The 'risk' that FireDAC will be provided for the most current Delphi version is high. I don't expect things to change so soon. If this strategy continues you will be forced to upgrade more often. In this case SA is the inevitable alternative. This is the logic imho.

So your need to engage in SA ... I am not sure if you can avoid. Delphi Enterprise SA is a lot cheaper than upgrading. EMB will make this the most attractive option, because they simply want people there.

RAD Studio, if you intend to use Prism, Mobile Studio, C++Builder ... does make sense too. But since I'm a hobbyist in the Windows corner 1K per year without VAT was little too much. The value you get in general is ok.

Yes, this is indeed a gleam of hope.

I hope he will be involved in satisfying current subscribers.

I honestly hope so, Dmitry.

If anyone is interested of what has changed since the last AnyDAC release and currently doesn't have access to FireDAC:

History FireDAC
v 7.0.1.3119 (27.02.13)

/ changed: product rebranded from AnyDAC to FireDAC
Library itself calls "FireDAC", including "[FireDAC]" in error messages.
Library API remains the same, including uAD*.pas unit and TADXxx class names.

- fixed: ADDataSet: stream incompatibility between v5 and v6
- fixed: ADDataSet: detail dataset may be not cleared on master dataset insert
- fixed: ADDataSet: Refresh inside of BeginBatch / EndBatch leads to non-empty updates cache.
Now it is prohibited to call Refresh inside of BeginBatch / EndBatch.

- fixed: ADMemTable: Refresh does nothing. Now rebuilds internal dataset views.

- fixed: ADTable: IndexDefs[].Options does not include ixDescending for descending indexes
- fixed: ADTable: range with equal border values uses more slow BETWEEN instead of EQUAL

- fixed: ADUpdateSQL: FetchRowSQL may not be used at some conditions

+ added: Local SQL: support for INSERT OR REPLACE using primary keys

- fixed: Phys: RecsMax & SELECT TOP leads to syntax error
- fixed: Phys: AV when an event alerter was registered, connection was losted and recovered
- fixed: Phys: not needed parameters recreation on IADPhysCommand.Prepare

- fixed: IB/FB: {IFNULL} with a parameter as a first argument fails
- fixed: FB: possible duplicate records after Array DML & error & eaSkip

- fixed: MySQL: default fields aren't refreshed when UpdateOptions.RefreshMode = rmOnDemand
- fixed: MySQL: wrong error message when a client version is not valid
- fixed: MySQL: fails to refresh a record with auto_inc after inserting. Regression from 2976

- fixed: Oracle: do not use MaxStringSize to limit maximum string parameter size in PL/SQL blocks

/ changed: MSSQL: SQLDMO SQL Server listing replaced with ODBC based
/ changed: MSSQL: ODBC CLI header updated to SQLNC10
- fixed: MSSQL: TADScript fails to execute EXEC <stored proc> command

- fixed: SQLite: inserted value with >= 16 digits into DECIMAL(21+) is fetched as n.nnn;nn

- fixed: PgSQL: "insufficient data left in message" error with dtExtended parameter

- fixed: XE3: TBinaryField.GetAsString does not return any data

HI!!!

By the way, why I ask for the upgrade if I have a valid license??

With this unfortunate movement, apparently I have to buy things I do not need and will now be required to acquire AnyDAC (FireDAC whatever you call it).

I'm pretty angry and upset (even betrayed) in EMBT everything is a business, things will never be the same, EMBT can not provide even a decent support to its customers; EMBT nothing has changed at all.

P.D. I always paid my license renewal months before expiry.
