OCI_Error 12514 with Oracle 9.2

I changed my client from 8.17 to Oracle 9.2
With some Service names without dot
like Oradb2 but not Oradb2.Avon I get
the above error TNS could not resolve
Service Name. Funny enought they work when
I append a .a or something to the name.
I do not want to change the service name
as this would affect 100's of users.
Any ideas?
